Healthy Heart Africa program was initiated in March 2016 under the administration of the Health Commission (Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops). It is sponsored by Astra Zeneca. The program focuses on early detection of hypertension and prevention of the potential health problems associated with uncontrolled blood pressure. To date our team of Community Health Volunteers has screened 111,065 people. Out of these 5,944 with blood pressure of 140/90 and above were referred for treatment.  Screening for hypertension is done in the community by trained Community Health Volunteers who mobilize the community for this activity at health facilities, market places, barazas, and churches. Health education is also carried out by a clinician in during these gatherings. Lifestyle counseling is provided on an individual basis and as well as in group sessions. This program has been able to reach out to many since medication prescribed is highly subsidized. We are grateful to the sponsor and the administrators for their periodic visits to the hospital to encourage and affirm us.

Training of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) is provided by program staff from Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) at Our Lady of Lourdes Mutomo Hospital on May 3rd 2019.
